Indigenous Models 2019

Model Expressions of Interest are open

The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair invites you to apply to be a part of the CIAF’s 7th Fashion Performance. Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for Individuals to participate in “Buwal-barra…Messenger. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.” This performance is jointly curated by Craftsman/Cultural Practitioner, Bernard Singleton, Artist/Sustainable Fashion Designer Simone Arnol and choreographed through performance by Freelancer/Professional Dancer/Model/ Choreographer & Mentor Hans Ahwang.

Through collaborating with Indigenous Creatives, Buwal-barra will share this new way of celebrating culture and stories through a curated fashion performance. CIAF’s appointed creative team are opening the opportunity up to all QLD Indigenous individuals who are interested in pushing the boundaries of fashion, art and culture.

In addition to their curatorial duties, the creative team will also be working with the successful applicants to ensure their talent is showcased at the highest possible level. CIAF is looking for unique individuals to highlight contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fine art with high end fashion through the act of adornment, presentation, performance and movement within two innovative and professional catwalk shows. This will align with a key focus on the theme of us being “the Messenger” of our old peoples through to the following generations with a  purpose to promote Indigenous design and to empower Indigenous youth through representation of who they are and where they come from.

This year’s Fashion Performance is to be made up of full collections (fashion), elaborate adornments (head dress neck & body adornments) or both.

CIAF are opening this mentorship and collaboration opportunity to all QLD Indigenous talent who are interested in exploring the fashion industry through modelling. This is a new realm of Fashion Performance, pushing the boundaries of fashion, art, performance and culture within movement, song and dance while holding on to the designer’s story and connection to country. This will be a barefoot performance therefore no shoes will be worn for the duration of the performance.

We are looking for motivated indigenous talent with a diverse range of experience who are interested in exploring fashion as a platform to express and represent their culture. We do require that all applicants are 16+ years of age. Please don't hesitate to apply.
