Queensland’s peak Indigenous arts and culture celebration first to secure new performing arts funding

4 January 2019

Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) is among the first recipients of new Queensland Government funding that will be used to further expand its already multi-dimensional arts and culture program.

Within the realm of New Commissions, one of three funding streams in the Queensland Government’s Backing Indigenous Arts – Performing Arts (BIA-PA) program, CIAF has received support to create Cultural Heights – a new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performance piece that will be the first of its kind.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Queensland Government was proud to support the Cultural Heights production with $150,000 in funding.

"This production is one of the first projects funded under the BIA-PA program which supports Queensland’s First Nations peoples through new performing arts commissions and by building artistic capacity," Ms Enoch said.

"Cultural Heights will be a wonderful achievement for CIAF as it celebrates its 10th anniversary year.

"CIAF's success is an outcome of the Queensland Government’s landmark Backing Indigenous Arts initiative which for more than a decade has helped to build a sustainable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art sector across the state."

CIAF’s Artistic Director Janina Harding said Cultural Heights is an exciting and ground-breaking project that uses the powerful combination of choir song, traditional language and storytelling synonymous to Queensland’s First Peoples.

“We are thrilled to be one of the first organisations to receive a performing arts grant which is a wonderful endorsement for what CIAF does to engage with Queensland’s Indigenous communities and we are proud to share this vibrant culture with the world.

“We acknowledge and thank the Queensland Government for its continued and unwavering support of CIAF in fulfilling its many aims not the least of which is the delivery of an inspiring, all-inclusive celebration of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture.”

Produced by CIAF, Cultural Heights will be among CIAF’s decade anniversary highlights presented on Saturday 14 July at the new Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC).
