About
"For as long as I can remember, my imagination has been brought to life by nature and my culture. The smell and sight of magara (sacred clay) bring back strong memories of my grandfather painted for dance. Together with my husband and children, we have shared culture across Australia through dance and storytelling."
Amy Neal learned to machine sew in the 1990s, creating garments for traditional performances, her children, and community. In the early 2000s, while working with CDEP, she made beaded earrings, shell necklaces, painted acrylic canvases, and experimented with design and printing.
She has participated in many cultural events and festivals, including NAIDOC, Moomba, and Quandamooka, creating cultural clothing, jewellery, and artefacts. Her interest in passing on language developed while working with the Gidajil Language Centre.
Neal currently supervises a sewing, arts and crafts, and beauty group for Wugu Nyambil's Transition to Work Program in Yarrabah and also serves as a Councillor for the Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council.
