Glen Mackie

Glen Mackie is a Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal artist with cultural heritage connected to Mapoon on Cape York Peninsula and Iama (Yam Island) in the Torres Strait. His practice reflects the intersection of these identities, drawing on deep connections to both Sea Country and mainland Country. Working primarily in printmaking and mixed media, Glen combines traditional motifs, cultural symbolism and contemporary design language to create visually distinctive works. His practice is grounded in storytelling, exploring themes of identity, resilience, intergenerational knowledge and the continuation of cultural practice across regions. Through his work, Glen contributes to the strength and visibility of First Nations cultural expression while engaging new audiences through contemporary forms.

Glen Mackie’s response to the theme Reclamation & Regeneration is grounded in his reconnection to both cultural identity and place. Drawing on his heritage from Mapoon and Iama (Yam Island), Glen’s work reclaims cultural narratives through the use of traditional motifs and symbols, reinterpreted through contemporary printmaking and mixed media. His practice reflects a process of regeneration, reviving stories, knowledge and visual language that connect Sea Country and mainland Country across generations. Through this approach, Glen not only honours his ancestors but also contributes to the continuation and evolution of cultural practice in a modern context. His participation in the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) 2026 marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time he has represented himself as an independent artist. This moment reflects both personal and professional growth, positioning his work within a broader national platform while reinforcing his commitment to cultural strength and renewal.
