Thomas Pedro

Thomas Pedro is a Torres Strait Islander headdress maker from Wug Village on Mua Island in the Western Torres Strait. Since beginning his artistic practice in 2012, he has developed a strong reputation for creating culturally significant headdresses that reflect the identity, stories, and connections to Sea Country of his people.

His work is deeply inspired by traditional knowledge and the natural environment, particularly marine life and birds of the Torres Strait. In 2023, he was awarded an art prize at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre for his Nagalaig (sea eagle) headdress, recognising both his craftsmanship and cultural expression.

Each dhoeri is carefully handcrafted, carrying stories of identity, connection to Sea Country, and the strength of Torres Strait Islander culture. Through his practice, Pedro remains committed to preserving and sharing cultural knowledge for future generations, while balancing cultural responsibility with artistic innovation.
