About
Vicki Marie Newie is a shell jewellery artist from Badu Island in Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait. Her practice celebrates the cultural significance of shells, which have long played an important role in Torres Strait Islander life through ceremony, trade, gift-giving, and the resolution of disputes.
Using natural materials, Vicki Newie handcrafts unique pieces of jewellery that honour these traditions while bringing cultural expression into contemporary design. Committed to preserving this specialised practice, she is among a small number of artisans continuing the tradition of shell jewellery making and is dedicated to sharing its cultural value with new audiences.
Alongside jewellery, her practice includes handcrafted stencil paintings, wind chimes, shell hair combs, display boards, key rings, fridge magnets, and tie-dye textiles. Each work reflects the beauty, stories, and enduring cultural heritage of Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait, celebrating the creativity and traditions of the Islands through contemporary handmade practice.
