Since its inception 12 years ago, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) has been a platform for establishing and supporting the careers of countless artists and performers. Furthermore, the Art Fair injects millions of dollars into the local and state-wide economies annually. CIAF’s commitment to artistic excellence is expanding, focusing on the careers of those in the arts industry, who work behind the scenes.

Supported by the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment, Small Business & Training (forming part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative), The Evolution Project is essentially a traineeship program. The project will enhance the skills of aspiring and emerging Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander arts workers. Commencing on 12 April, over a 6 month paid traineeship, trainees will learn all facets of event management and what it takes to deliver a national, annual art event. Traineeships will focus on learning skills from four key departments of CIAF, with their time at CIAF culminating in a Certificate I in Business.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to join the CIAF team in delivering the 2021 Art Fair and series of events (which include: Art Market, Fashion Performance, Music in the Park, and much more) in August. Applicants are asked to indicate their area of interest, from the following four key departments:

  • Exhibitions
  • Production & Events
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Performance
